Onwards into the Middle East

With Irina back in the picture, the latest movements show that she has so far made it as far as the northern Iraq border.   Boris has moved from Stavropol, across Turkey, and is now in northern Syria.  Shirin is following a similar path, but is currently in the vicinity of the important site of Ceylanpınar in Turkey, and hopefully Turan and his team from Doğa Derneği will be able to catch sight of her.

We also have new evidence that sociable lapwings also use pastures in Turkey, not just arable fields.  A large herd of livestock can be seen just south of one of Shirin’s stopover points.

Elsewhere nearby, 98 birds were recently found on a newer area of ploughed field.

Meanwhile, on the eastern flyway, Hanna and Stepaniya have not moved far from their two stop-over sites at the Uzbekistan/Turkmenistan border.  Looking more closely at the satellite images, it looks like these may be separate rather than contiguous areas, but until we do some further investigation on the ground, we can’t be sure.
