The start of the Sociable Lapwings’ autumn migration in 2010 appears to be slightly later than in the previous years we’ve been monitoring them. However, we still don’t know a great deal about the timing of their migrations so this is probably quite normal. It is still very warm in central Kazakhstan and birds have been seen foraging, in areas where hay has been cut and wheat harvested, near to their breeding sites.
Despite expectations that Abaj would have embarked on his migration by now, our most recent signal logged at 01:04 on August 18th confirmed he is still currently close to his breeding grounds a few kilometers East of Lake Tengiz in Central Kazakhstan.
